HEART OF DARKNESS - Winter Solstice Ritual The long descent from the summer solstice via the autumn equinox to the shortest day of the year on the 21st December is not just an astrological journey but a powerful gestational and transformational process. All around us in nature we are witness to the gradual decline and closing down of life and the emergence of hibernation patterns, and yet, far from this being the end of life itself, what we are seeing is an important aspect of the life cycle itself - a period of rest and renewal, a clearing away of the old to make way for new life in the spring. Similarly, on a psychological level, we are required to confront the darker aspects of our psyche - our shadow - as part of a broader process of transformation and renewal.
